Why a copper roof?

Copper is a unique roofing material. It does not rust and requires no protective coating — copper's natural patina acts as protection. When new, copper is a shiny reddish colour, gradually changing to dark brown over the years and eventually to a distinctive green. Copper is also extremely light and easy to work with, making it an excellent choice for complex roof shapes.

Copper roof applications

A copper roof is particularly suited for the restoration of historic buildings, as roofing for churches and public buildings, and as a premium roof for prestigious properties. In modern architecture, a copper roof adds warmth and character. Copper is also used in details: chimney flashings, fascia boards and roof hatches.

Copper roof price

The price of a copper roof is typically 100–180 €/m². Although the initial investment is higher than other materials, a copper roof is cost-effective in the long term — it requires no maintenance, painting or replacement for decades. Copper also has a high scrap value.

Copper patina

Copper patination is a natural process in which the copper surface oxidises and forms a protective layer. The process takes 15–30 years depending on conditions. The patina can also be accelerated chemically if a green surface is desired from the outset. The patina is not just beautiful — it protects the copper from corrosion and extends the roof's lifespan.

Copper roof maintenance

A copper roof is virtually maintenance-free. It requires no painting, coating or other treatment. Only gutter cleaning and a general visual inspection are sufficient. Copper withstands Finnish weather conditions excellently — frost, snow, wind and UV radiation without any issues.
