Choosing the right roofing material is one of the most important decisions when planning a roof renovation. The material affects the roof's lifespan, cost, appearance, and maintenance needs. This guide helps you compare options and choose the right material for your roof.

Metal Roof — Finland's Most Popular Roofing Material

Sheet metal is by far the most popular roofing material in Finland. It lasts 40–60 years, is lightweight, low-maintenance, and suitable for nearly all roof types. Sheet metal roofing is energy-efficient and 100% recyclable. The price is 50–70 €/m², making it an excellent value-for-money choice. Profiled sheet metal is the most affordable option, while standing seam is the premium choice with a 50–70-year lifespan.

Tile Roof — Classic and Long-Lasting

Tile roofing is the most durable roofing material — its lifespan can reach up to 80 years. Tile offers excellent sound and thermal insulation, withstands UV radiation, and is fire-safe. Tile roofing is heavier than sheet metal and requires a stronger substructure. The price is 70–100 €/m². Clay tile outlasts concrete tile and retains its colour for decades.

Felt Roof — Affordable and Quick to Install

Felt roofing is the most affordable roof renovation option at 35–55 €/m². It is particularly suited to flat roofs and low-pitch angles. Modern rubber bitumen membrane lasts 25–30 years. Felt roofing is quick to install — a typical detached house is completed in 2–3 days. It is especially popular in apartment buildings and terraced houses.

Standing Seam Roof — Premium Choice

Standing seam roofing is the most durable sheet metal roofing solution with a 50–70-year lifespan. Seams are machine-formed on-site without screw holes in the roof surface, ensuring excellent weather-tightness. The price is 60–90 €/m². Standing seam is also well suited for low-pitch roofs (over 3°) and modern architecture.
